Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) volunteers who graciously donate their time make a difference and touch lives, all while gaining valuable firsthand experience. Day in and day out, our volunteers offer comforting smiles, words of encouragement and helping hands throughout the hospital. In 2015, MIHS volunteers provided a total of 33,866 hours of service in 33 different areas throughout the system. We firmly believe our volunteers are a key component to ensuring each patient’s healthcare experience is as personal, soothing and as clear-cut as possible. Volunteers interact with patients, families, physicians and staff in a variety of ways. Duties include greeting visitors, helping family members in surgery areas and emergency departments, and providing transportation for patients.Certified pet therapy, music enrichment and clown therapy are additional services offered by our volunteers. Research strongly indicates animal assisted therapy helps healing and lessens depression and fatigue. Music therapy is known to ease anxiety and even reduce the perception of pain. We realize hospitals can be an overwhelming place for a child, so our clown volunteers use humor and gentle play to minimize stress during hospitalization and treatment.
